Detailed Description

This set of practice notes provide useful plain english 'how to' guidance on a range of sustainable water and WSUD practices that are especially suited to small sites - existing and new homes.

The Notes use diagrams, images and flowcharts to help explain technical concepts. Each Note contains useful information on suppliers and specifications for the HCCREMS region; and link to useful sources of further information including approval authorities, guidance and requirements.

Note 1: Introduction - overviews each of the topics covered in this set and prompts consideration of how all the measures in the set can integrate within a single site.

Note 2: Site planning - outlines key drainage and water balance concepts and 'urban water cycle' concepts at the scale of a small site.

Note 3: Drainage design - promotes consideration of drainage issues at the initial design phase of your site.

Note 4: Rainwater tanks - introduces the basics of rainwater tank design, selection and installation.

Note 5: Infiltration devices - includes leaky wells, infiltration trenches and basins.

Note 6: Porous paving - illustrates how to reduce the impact of impervious surfaces on local waterways by using porous, pervious paving alternatives to infiltrate rainwater into groundwater instead of public stormwater drains and local waterways.

Note 7: Landscape stormwater measures - covers rock or gravel basins, vegetated filter strips, grass scales, contour banks, green roofs and raingardens.

Note 8: Water efficient landscape practices - explains how to save water in the garden through water smart horticultural and gardening techniques.

Note 9: Wastewater Reuse - overviews options for onsite waste water treatment and reuse, including septic tanks.

Note 10: Groundwater measures - includes extracting from bores, and artificially 'recharging' stormwater back into local groundwater systems.

Note 11 describes the Site Discharge Index, which is applied by some councils during the development assessment stage to reduce the impacts of stormwater drainage from smaller sites.
